Anti-Green Tip #8: Batteries

Every time my TV remote goes kaput or my smoke alarm starts beeping, I rip the batteries out and throw them away. "They" say you can recycle batteries, whoever "they" are. But I don't believe it. How could you possibly recycle a battery? What's it going to be made into - a light-up Patagonia fleece?
